Thumbs up Another United Treble

Unstoppable Reds Complete Treble

FA Premier Reserve League Shield
Old Trafford, May 4, 2006 Manchester United 2
Piqué (27), Solskjaer (29)
Tottenham Hotspur 0
United's Reserves sealed an unbelievable Treble with a comprehensive win over Tottenham in the Reserve League Shield.
Goals from Gerard Piqué and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in three first-half minutes gave Rene Meulensteen's side their third trophy in 9 days, following success in the Manchester Senior Cup and FA Premier Reserve League North.
United turned in a scintillating first-half display, and could have been ahead through Kieran Lee or Fraizer Campbell before they did take the lead.
Spurs failed to clear Markus Neumayr's right-wing free-kick properly, and the ball was teed up for Darron Gibson on the edge of the area.
Although the Derry-born midfielder, last night named Academy Player of the Year, didn't hit his shot cleanly, Piqué's cheeky flick sent the ball into the back of the net.
Two minutes later Solskjaer, a late replacement for Giuseppe Rossi, thundered in a scorching second goal to leave the visitors reeling.
The superb Lee fed Danny Rose on the left. His pull-back found Solskjaer in space and the Norwegian needed just two touches; one to set himself and the other to crash an unstoppable shot in off the underside of the crossbar.

Rossi, scorer of a hat-trick in last year's playoff shield win over Charlton, was introduced at half-time for Solskjaer.

The Italian's first telling involvement was to almost set up a goal for Fraizer Campbell on 50 minutes. After being fed by his partner, Campbell's scuffed shot was cleared off the line.

Rossi should have notched his 31st goal of the Reserves' season 15 minutes from time, but he couldn't convert the rebound as Gibson's powerful shot was parried.

The evening ended sourly as Spurs keeper Robert Birch was carried off with a heavily strapped left leg, following a collision with Fraizer Campbell.

The young goalkeeper was given a warm ovation from the Old Trafford crowd, but the biggest reception was saved for Rene Meulensteen's all-conquering side.

United's young side revelled in the post-match celebrations. Laden with trophies and champagne, it was the only fitting reward for such a wonderful effort all season long.

United: Howard, Gray, Lee, J Evans, Piqué, Gibson, Neumayr, Fletcher (R Jones, 69), Campbell, Solskjaer (Rossi, 46), Rose (Mullan, 80).
Substitutes: Steele, Shawcross.

well done boys Keep it up

That would be nice but I think it will be a long while before that again. Thats awesome though that the Reserves captured the Treble. Good for Gunnar I'm happy for him. Now we just need to get the 1st team ready for next year which I'm sure wont be a problem under the direction of Ferguson.

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine as children do. It's not just in some of us; it is in everyone. And as we let our own lights shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others-Tino Cruz

Reserve teams are sometimes really good and have some great players. Like in Real Madrid, some of the Castilla players (like Soldado and De la Red) are more consistent than some of the first team players (like Cassano).
